Using selected ensemble pieces, I will present various strategies for combining through-composed and ‘flexible’ zones that require both from the performers: improvisational and listening skills. In the course of my reflections I will also introduce Pauline Oliveros’ practice of Deep Listening.
Biography
Austrian pianist and composer Elisabeth Harnik has a multifaceted work in improvised music, interdisciplinary projects, and contemporary composition. She studied classical piano and composition with Beat Furrer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. As an improviser, she is inspired by electro-acoustic sound, using preparations and extended techniques to push the piano’s limits. Her performances combine physicality, introspection, intuition, and precision. She works internationally with renowned contemporary jazz musicians like Joëlle Léandre, Ken Vandermark and Harri Sjöström. CD releases document her compositional and pianistic activities.
